**Short answer:** Murf AI's studio costs $0 on a free plan limited to 10 minutes of voice generation, then $19 per month billed annually for Creator with 24 hours of voice generation a year, and $66 per month billed annually for Business with 96 hours a year. Every paid tier includes a commercial license and unlimited downloads, and the free tier includes neither. The number that decides your plan is not the monthly price but the yearly voice generation allowance, because that pool is what caps how much audio you can actually produce before Murf stops generating.

**Disclosure:** we make Murmur, a one-time $49 Mac app that competes with Murf for voiceover production. This article is written to be useful whether or not you buy it. Murf is a polished browser studio, and its pricing is fair for hosted voices, template integrations, and team access. The two expensive mistakes are buying a plan whose annual allowance is too small for your output, and paying month-to-month when a yearly plan was the right shape all along.

## Murf AI plans and what each one costs

Murf sells several products under one brand, and the plan ladder most people mean when they search for Murf pricing is the Studio subscription below. The figures come from Murf's own pricing page (murf.ai/pricing), checked on October 14, 2026. The page shows the lower per-month number only when annual billing is selected and labels that choice as roughly a third cheaper, so read the billing toggle before you check out rather than anchoring on the first price you see.

| Plan | Price billed annually | Voice generation | Downloads and rights | Included extra |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0 | 10 minutes total | No downloads, no commercial rights | Audition access only |
| Creator | $19 per month ($228 per year) | 24 hours per year | Unlimited downloads, personal commercial license | Canva integration |
| Business | $66 per month ($792 per year) | 96 hours per year | Business license, downloads included | PowerPoint and Google Slides integrations |
| Enterprise | Custom, contact sales | Unlimited | Custom terms | Seats, security, and add-ons negotiated |

Two details in that table surprise buyers. The first is that the free plan is an audition rather than a working tier: it blocks downloads, so you cannot export the audio you create, and it carries no commercial rights. The second is that the self-serve tiers are published as individual plans with a single editor, and the collaboration features that teams care about sit higher up the stack. If more than one person needs to work in the same project, read Murf's Workspaces documentation and confirm what your plan includes before you commit. Plan names and allowances change, so treat the table as a snapshot and verify it on Murf's page.

## Voice Generation Time is the limit that decides your plan

Murf does not sell Studio access in the character credits many people expect. It meters usage as Voice Generation Time, or VGT, which Murf's help center documents as its own topic. On the pricing page the allowance is stated in hours per year: 10 minutes in total on Free, 24 hours a year on Creator, and 96 hours a year on Business. Because the allowance is set for the year, plan around your total annual output rather than a single busy week. Here is what those numbers actually buy:

- Free covers 10 minutes in total, not per month, and cannot export the result.
- Creator's 24 hours a year works out to about 2 hours of generated audio per month on average.
- Business's 96 hours a year works out to about 8 hours of generated audio per month on average.
- Retakes spend the same pool. Regenerating a line costs generation time exactly like the first attempt did.
- A fixed annual pool rewards planning. Batch similar lines, fix pronunciation before a full run, and check the Voice Generation Time help article for how Murf counts and displays consumption.

This is the part a monthly price hides. A plan can look cheap until you measure your production against the yearly pool and realize the retakes alone consume a third of it. The next section does that arithmetic with two common jobs.

## Two worked examples to size the allowance

Start with a creator publishing one 8 minute YouTube video a week and taking two generations per video, one draft and one corrected take. That is 16 minutes of generation a week, about 70 minutes a month, and about 14 hours across a year. Creator's 24 hours a year covers that with comfortable room for extra retakes, so this job fits the entry tier without strain.

Now take a narrator recording a 6 hour audiobook and regenerating about half of it for tone and pronunciation fixes. The finished audio is 6 hours, but the generation total is closer to 9 hours, and a second book in the same year pushes past 18. Creator can still carry one book, but a narrator producing two or three a year belongs on Business at 96 hours, or needs a plan that is not built on a fixed annual pool at all. Neither example includes the extra takes that come from script edits, and those are exactly what burn a yearly allowance, so budget a retake margin before you decide Creator is enough.

## What Murf costs over time

Because Murf renews, the honest comparison is cumulative. The table below adds the annual prices of the two self-serve tiers next to Murmur's one-time price. It ignores promotions, taxes, and regional pricing, and it assumes you keep producing at the same level.

| After | Murf Creator | Murf Business | Murmur one-time |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 year | $228 | $792 | $49 |
| 2 years | $456 | $1,584 | $49 |
| 3 years | $684 | $2,376 | $49 |

Three years of Creator is $684 and three years of Business is $2,376, while the one-time option is $49 once. That does not make Murf overpriced. A hosted studio with a large managed voice catalogue, browser access, and template integrations is a different product from a local Mac app, and many buyers value those things more than the total. It does mean that if you only need repeatable narration you generate yourself on hardware you already own, the subscription outruns the one-time tool inside the first year. For the general version of this tradeoff, see our breakdown of a [one-time app versus a subscription](https://www.murmurtts.com/blog/one-time-tts-app-vs-subscription), and for the closest hosted comparison read our [ElevenLabs pricing](https://www.murmurtts.com/blog/elevenlabs-pricing) article, since both are metered, renewing products.

## When Murf is the better choice

Murf earns its price in situations a local app cannot cover, and it is worth being direct about them:

- You need Windows, Chrome, iOS, or Android rather than a Mac. Murf runs in the browser and does not tie you to one machine.
- More than one person needs access through shared projects and workspaces, and you want that managed for you rather than synced by hand.
- You want built-in integrations such as Canva, PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Adobe Captivate.
- You also want Murf's other products, such as dubbing, translation, or the voice changer, from the same vendor.
- You want a large managed voice catalogue with dozens of languages without installing or updating models yourself.
- You prefer a subscription with support over managing models and files on your own hardware.

If any of those describe you, pay for the tier that fits and stop comparing. Speechify and Murf sit in the same hosted camp, and our [Speechify cost](https://www.murmurtts.com/blog/speechify-cost) breakdown shows the identical recurring-cost structure and the same annual allowance question. The only costly errors here are picking a plan whose yearly VGT is too small for your output, and paying monthly when you already know you will keep the tool for a year.

## When a local one-time tool is the better fit

If your job is producing finished narration on a Mac you already own, a monthly fee is avoidable. Murmur is a local voice studio for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 15 or later, at $49 once. It generates speech on the machine, supports voice cloning and voice design, and exports audio for your projects without a per-character or per-hour meter. The model list the app ships includes a lightweight preset model for fast drafts, cloning models for matching a voice from a short reference sample, and a voice design model for building a voice from a description. Check the current catalog in the app before you buy.

Be clear about the tradeoff. Murmur is macOS only and has no browser, Windows, iOS, or Android version, no real-time streaming voice, and no cloud collaboration. It does not do speech to text. It is a production tool for people who work on a Mac and want to own the workflow. There is a free plan and a 3-day Pro trial, only a 7 day refund policy, so download it, test it with your own script, and use that window if it is not right. The direct head to head is in our [Murmur vs Murf AI](https://www.murmurtts.com/blog/murmur-vs-murf-ai) comparison, and the no-meter angle is covered in our guide to an [AI voice generator without credits](https://www.murmurtts.com/blog/ai-voice-generator-no-credits).

## A checklist before you buy either one

Run these six steps in order. Each one can settle the decision on its own.

1. Write down your yearly output in hours of finished audio, then add about 50 percent for retakes.
2. Match that number to a plan: well under 24 hours a year points to Creator, and up to 96 hours a year points to Business.
3. Check whether you need downloads and a commercial license. Murf's free plan has neither.
4. Choose annual billing only if you are confident you will keep the tool for a full year, because it locks in the lower rate.
5. Decide whether you need another platform, an API, dubbing, or team seats, since those decide the category before price does.
6. If you work solo on an Apple Silicon or Intel Mac and only need your own narration, price the one-time option against three years of the subscription before you commit.

Most people land on an answer at step five. If you need another platform, an API, or shared seats, Murf is the category and the only question left is which tier and which billing period. If you are a solo Mac producer, the one-time route is the one to price seriously before you start a subscription, which is where the [one-time app versus subscription](https://www.murmurtts.com/blog/one-time-tts-app-vs-subscription) breakdown helps. And if you mainly want to listen to documents rather than produce audio, neither of these studio tools is the right purchase at all.
