Syllable counts come from vowel tokens; CMUdict does not supply syllable boundaries here. Variant order follows the dictionary and does not rank correctness. This lexicon does not represent every accent or context.

## Use banal in context

Banal describes something unoriginal or so familiar that it lacks interest. Reviews and critical essays use it to make a judgment about ideas, language, or imagery. Narrators should make that judgment proportionate and attributed, particularly when the surrounding passage includes both praise and criticism.

1. The reviewer found the dialogue banal but praised the performances.
2. A banal slogan replaced the more thoughtful campaign message.

### A practice cue

Test banal within the full evaluative sentence and compare your intended accent with a chosen reference. Listen for unnecessary contempt in the voice; a measured delivery can communicate criticism while preserving the nuance of the rest of the review.

## Read the sound tokens

Each example word below is a cue for the named sound, rather than a respelling of banal. Unstressed vowels may sound reduced. These cues follow the [CMU phoneme-set key (Appendix A)](https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~aria/Papers/MastersThesis.pdf#page=115).
