## Use conch in context

Readers meet conch in Lord of the Flies, beach travel stories and seafood menus. CMUdict lists K AA1 NG K, ending in a k sound, and K AA1 N CH, ending in "ch". Either works, but a class reading should pick one and keep it.

1. The boys used the conch to call everyone to the meeting.
2. He held the conch shell to his ear to hear the waves.

### A practice cue

Mark the hard or soft ending at the first mention in a literature reading. Hold it through the passage, including any repeated dialogue.

Each example word below is a cue for the named sound, rather than a respelling of conch. Unstressed vowels may sound reduced. These cues follow the [CMU phoneme-set key (Appendix A)](https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~aria/Papers/MastersThesis.pdf#page=115).
