Syllable counts come from vowel tokens; CMUdict does not supply syllable boundaries here. Variant order follows the dictionary and does not rank correctness. This lexicon does not represent every accent or context.

## Use epithet in context

Epithet names a descriptive expression associated with a person or thing and can also refer to an insulting label. Literary and historical narration should establish which meaning applies. When analyzing dialogue, a narrator should distinguish discussing an expression from adopting the speaker's attitude toward its target.

1. The poem repeats the epithet to reinforce the hero's reputation.
2. The witness recalled the epithet without repeating it aloud.

### A practice cue

Audition epithet with the explanation of the expression's function. If your script includes quoted language, compare the quotation with the analysis and use pacing or attribution to keep the narrator's explanation distinct from the original speaker's judgment.

## Read the sound tokens

Each example word below is a cue for the named sound, rather than a respelling of epithet. Unstressed vowels may sound reduced. These cues follow the [CMU phoneme-set key (Appendix A)](https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~aria/Papers/MastersThesis.pdf#page=115).
