## Use juxtaposition in context

Juxtaposition describes placing things beside one another so their relationship becomes noticeable. Art analysis and literary narration should identify both elements and explain the effect of their proximity. The term is most useful when listeners can hear what the comparison reveals, rather than receiving only an abstract label for the arrangement.

1. The juxtaposition of the two photographs changes how we read each one.
2. Her essay uses juxtaposition to connect a childhood memory with a public event.

### A practice cue

Test juxtaposition with both elements of the comparison named nearby. Listen for balanced pacing across those elements, and give the explanation of their relationship enough room so the long analytical term does not become the passage's main point.
