Syllable counts come from vowel tokens; CMUdict does not supply syllable boundaries here. Variant order follows the dictionary and does not rank correctness. This lexicon does not represent every accent or context.

## Use kiln in context

Kiln is the oven for firing pottery and glass, and it shows up in ceramics classes, craft videos and studio tours. Potters often say "kil", dropping the n. That habit is common enough that some dictionaries accept it. CMUdict has only the form with the n, so that is what this page teaches.

1. The bowls spend twelve hours in the kiln.
2. Our studio bought a second kiln for glazes.

### A practice cue

Close the word on the n after the l. Do not add a vowel between them. If your audience is potters, know that many of them say "kil".

## Read the sound tokens

Each example word below is a cue for the named sound, rather than a respelling of kiln. Unstressed vowels may sound reduced. These cues follow the [CMU phoneme-set key (Appendix A)](https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~aria/Papers/MastersThesis.pdf#page=115).
