Syllable counts come from vowel tokens; CMUdict does not supply syllable boundaries here. Variant order follows the dictionary and does not rank correctness. This lexicon does not represent every accent or context.

## Use melee in context

Melee describes a confused struggle or a jostling crowd, often in action scenes or accounts of disorder. Narration needs clear subjects and movement because the word itself provides little spatial information. A vivid reading should preserve who is involved and what happens, even when the described event is chaotic.

1. The dropped banner disappeared beneath the melee near the gate.
2. She stepped out of the melee and checked that her friend was safe.

### A practice cue

Audition melee with the people and actions surrounding it, using a reference appropriate to your intended accent. Compare brisk and measured delivery, listening for whether the listener can still follow the participants and the next event through the confusion.

## Read the sound tokens

Each example word below is a cue for the named sound, rather than a respelling of melee. Unstressed vowels may sound reduced. These cues follow the [CMU phoneme-set key (Appendix A)](https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~aria/Papers/MastersThesis.pdf#page=115).
