## Use nonchalant in context

Nonchalant describes an apparently casual or unconcerned manner. Fiction often uses it when a person's outward behavior conceals excitement, fear, or deliberate performance. Narration should make the observable gesture clear and allow the surrounding text to determine whether that calmness is authentic or part of an act.

1. She gave a nonchalant wave as the cameras turned toward her.
2. His nonchalant reply concealed the effort he had put into the proposal.

### A practice cue

Test nonchalant with the outward action and any later disclosure of feeling. Compare relaxed and slightly guarded delivery, listening for whether the chosen voice preserves the difference between the character's appearance and the emotion the narrator knows about.
