# How to pronounce rhythm

## The dictionary sound sequence

CMUdict lists this North American English pronunciation for **rhythm**. Read each sequence from left to right. The numbers mark vowel stress: **1** primary, **2** secondary, **0** unstressed.

## Use rhythm in context

Rhythm describes patterns of timing or movement in music, speech, and other activity. In production commentary, it may refer to a musical pattern or the pacing of a spoken passage. Narration should identify what creates the pattern, giving the audience a concrete sound or action to connect with the term.

1. The drummer changed the rhythm as the dancers entered.
2. Short sentences gave the closing paragraph a different rhythm.

### A practice cue

Audition rhythm inside the musical example and the spoken passage separately. Listen for an even delivery of the word, then evaluate the timing of the whole sentence; a clear pronunciation cannot repair pacing that contradicts the pattern being described.
