## Use solder in context

Electronics tutorials, repair videos and product assembly instructions all use solder. The CMU entry drops the l and stresses the first syllable with an "ah" vowel. British English often sounds the l, which this entry does not include.

1. Heat the joint before you add the solder.
2. Use lead-free solder for the replacement board.

### A practice cue

Say "SAH" and "der" with the l left out entirely. In a step-by-step tutorial, read the instructions aloud once to check the word stays consistent across steps.

Each example word below is a cue for the named sound, rather than a respelling of solder. Unstressed vowels may sound reduced. These cues follow the [CMU phoneme-set key (Appendix A)](https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~aria/Papers/MastersThesis.pdf#page=115).
