How to pronounce often

Often can be said with a silent t, OFF-un, or a sounded one, OFF-tun; CMUdict lists both, so neither is an error.

Use often in context

Often is one of the most common words in narration, and the t is a source of debate. CMUdict lists AO1 F AH0 N without the t and AO1 F T AH0 N with it. A narrator who uses both within the same piece draws more attention than either choice would on its own.

  1. She often recorded at night when the street was quiet.
  2. How often should the backups run?
