Windows TTS

Text to speech on Windows, from built-in voices to local apps

Windows can read text aloud. When you need a finished audio file, a local voice app gives you a voice, a script box, and an export button in one place.

Local workflow

text to speech Windows

Murmur runs locally on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11, so your text stays on your PC and you can export WAV without cloud APIs or per-word fees.

  • Works on Windows 10 and 11
  • Kokoro included offline
  • Export WAV
  • No per-word fees

01 · Context

What Windows already does

Windows includes Narrator and system voices for reading text on screen. Many browsers and PDF readers can also read a page aloud. These options are free and useful for listening, accessibility, and checking how a draft sounds.

The gap appears when you need a file. System speech is built for playback, not for producing a voiceover track you can drop into an editor. It also gives you limited control over voice choice, pronunciation, and export format.

02 · Highlights

The three ways to do text to speech on Windows

Built-in Windows voices

Free and already installed. Best for reading on screen, accessibility, and quick listening. Not designed for exporting project audio.

Cloud voice services

Browser tools and APIs give you hosted voices and team features. You pay by subscription or usage, and your text is processed on their servers.

Local Windows voice apps

Murmur runs the speech models on your PC and exports WAV. You buy once, there is no character meter, and your script stays on your computer.

03 · Highlights

When the built-in option is enough

You only need to hear the text

Narrator and browser read-aloud cover listening without installing anything.

You need accessibility, not assets

For screen reading and study workflows, the system tools are the right fit.

You are testing a draft

Playing a draft aloud is a fast way to catch awkward sentences before you record or generate a final version.

04 · Workflow

A simple Windows workflow with Murmur

01Install Murmur for Windows and open the app.
02Paste your script into the text box.
03Choose Kokoro for a quick free read, or a Pro model for cloning or Voice Design.
04Preview the result and adjust the speed or voice if needed.
05Export the clip as a WAV file and import it into your editor.

Kokoro works offline from the installer. Optional models download once and then run on your PC, using an NVIDIA GPU when one is available.

05 · Context

What to check before you buy

Confirm that you have 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. Check how much disk space you can spare if you plan to use the larger Pro models. If you want cloning, have a clean reference clip ready. If you want Voice Design, decide which model fits your language and style.

The Windows beta is a single-script workflow. If you need projects, a batch queue, community voice browsing, CLI automation, or M4A export, those are Mac features today. The Windows page lists the differences in full.
