03 / Voices
Two voice engines
- Built-in voice
- Works everywhere with no setup. Uses the voice built into your operating system for the page language. Free and on-device.
- Murmur voices
- In Chrome and Firefox on a Mac: if the Murmur app with Murmur Pro is running and Settings > Automation is on, the extension can use Murmur's natural offline AI voices through a small local helper. Safari uses the voices built into macOS.
04 / Privacy
Your text never leaves your computer
The extension has no analytics, no accounts and no remote code. Text is spoken by your browser's on-device speech engine or by the Murmur app on the same computer. Some browsers offer voices that send text to an online service; the extension never uses them. Settings stay in your browser's local extension storage.
05 / Want more than reading aloud?
Murmur for Mac and Windows
The extension reads pages. Murmur, the desktop app, makes audio you can keep: voiceovers, audiobooks, narration for videos and courses, and cloned or designed voices. It runs offline on your own computer, exports WAV or M4A, and has a free plan with a one-time license for Pro.
Free plan with Kokoro voices, 3,000 characters a day · 3-day Pro trial, then $49 once

FAQ
Is Murmur Read Aloud free?
Yes. The extension is free and has no account, trial or limit. It reads with the voices already built into your browser and operating system.
How do I make it read the whole page?
Click the toolbar button and choose Read this page, or press Alt+Shift+R with nothing selected and click Read this page. The extension finds the main article on the page and reads that, skipping menus, sidebars and footers.
Which browsers does it work in?
Chrome, Firefox and Safari on Mac. Chrome builds such as Edge and Brave can usually install Chrome extensions too.
Do I need the Murmur app?
No. Without it you get your browser's built-in voices. In Chrome and Firefox on a Mac, if Murmur with Murmur Pro is running and Settings > Automation is on, the extension can also use Murmur's natural offline AI voices. Safari uses the voices built into macOS.
Does my text get sent anywhere?
No. Text is spoken on your computer, either by the browser's on-device speech engine or by the Murmur app through a small local helper. Browser voices that send text to an online service are never used. There are no analytics and no accounts.
Can I change the speed or the voice?
Yes. Pick any on-device voice and set the reading speed from the toolbar popup. You can pause, resume or stop at any time, and the sentence being read is highlighted on the page.
