On this page
1. Data we collect
None. The extension does not collect, store on any server, sell or share personal data. It has no analytics, telemetry, advertising, tracking or accounts, and it does not load or run remote code.
2. How your text is handled
When you ask the extension to read, it takes the text you selected, or the main article of the page if nothing is selected, and processes it only on your device. That text goes to one of two places:
- Your browser's on-device speech engine. The extension uses the built-in voice for the page language and skips voices that send text to an online service, so they are never used.
- The Murmur app on the same computer. If Murmur for Mac is installed and running with Murmur Pro and Settings > Automation turned on, the extension passes the text to it through native messaging, a local channel between the browser and an app on your computer. Murmur generates the speech offline.
The text is not saved by the extension and is not sent over the internet.
3. Settings stored in your browser
The extension keeps a few settings in your browser's local extension storage:
- Your reading speed.
- The Murmur voice you chose, if any.
- Whether the Listen button on selected text is turned on.
- A count of how many times you have used it, used only to show a short Murmur tip every 5th read.
These settings are not synced across devices and are never transmitted. Removing the extension deletes them.
4. Links to our website
The only outbound links in the extension point to murmurtts.com. They open only when you click them, and they carry UTM tags (utm_source=read-aloud-extension) so we can see that a visit came from the extension. Once you are on murmurtts.com, the website's privacy policy applies.
5. Permissions and why we ask for them
- activeTab: read the selection or article on the tab you are on, only when you start reading.
- scripting: add the reader to that page so it can find the text and highlight the current sentence.
- contextMenus: add "Read aloud with Murmur" to the right-click menu.
- storage: remember your speed, voice and read count in local extension storage.
- nativeMessaging: talk to the Murmur app on your computer when you choose Murmur voices.
- tts (Chrome): speak with Chrome's built-in voices.
- offscreen (Chrome): keep speech playing in the background while you scroll or switch tabs.
- Access to all sites (optional, Chrome and Firefox): asked for only if you turn on "Listen button on selected text" in the popup. It shows a small Listen button next to text you select. The button reads nothing until you click it, and then only the selected text. Turning the switch off removes this access.
6. Children
The extension does not collect data from anyone, including children.
7. Changes to this policy
If the extension's handling of data changes, we will update this page and the effective date above before the new version is released.
